On a wet and rainy early Fall Saturday morning the Federal Liberals came to Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre to engage Canadians on their Electoral Reform initiative. It was a fitting atmosphere outside for a poorly orchestrated event held by 6 Mississauga MPs and one very special guest Mark Holland Parliamentary Secretary to embattled Minister of Democratic Institutions Maryam Monsef. In case you missed it, the Honourable Ms. Monsef is accused of falsifying information on her refugee and citizenship application. The penalty for such a transgression, she faces having her citizenship revoked and even deportation, an action many in the Opposition are calling for. In spite of our own Canadian version of the ‘Trump birther’ scandal, the cross-country town hall engagement experiment continued.
Most Canadians today consider themselves ‘Socially Progressive’, but do we really understand what this nebulous concept means? If so, then why does it seem that so many of our elected representatives are manipulating us? Is it through our own ignorance, or has our apathy for politics allowed us to accept destructive policies by many of these agenda driven idealogues? There is no question that opportunism of the worst kind has infested every realm of our political sphere.
As you can probably sense by now I aim to level a scathing indictment of this current ‘reality’, one that could not possibly exist without our complicity. To be sure, these are self-inflicted wounds amassed over decades because of ‘laissez-fair’ mentality from the majority of the Canadian Electorate.
As I sit down and perform my daily task of scanning through Canadian news media services I realize that being a News Junkie has its pros and cons. On one hand I feel well informed, armed to debate the latest political scandal. On the other hand, (the one I slap my forehead repeatedly in disbelief) I have come to accept that this information overload saddens me when I come across story upon story of government waste, corruption and malfeasance.
