City looks to partner with YMCA on community centre
Posted April 23, 2014—Ward 10 Councillor Sue McFadden is elated with City Council’s decision today to approve an important “next step” in the process that will bring a much-needed community centre to her ward.
Preliminary discussions between the City of Mississauga and the YMCA of Greater Toronto Area have resulted in a Letter of Intent that demonstrates the interest of both parties to pursue a potential partnership in the building and operation of a community centre.
The site for the proposed 60,000 square foot facility is Park 459, a 55-acre parcel of city-owned parkland on Ninth Line near Tacc Drive in the Churchill Meadows community. It will be the hub of a larger recreational amenity, including sports fields, trails and green space.
“This centre has been part of the City’s master plan for more than five years and there has been a lot of work going on in the background to get to this step,” said McFadden. “Over that time, Ward 10 has grown by tens of thousands of residents and this building will be a wonderful gathering place that will help to complete the City’s northwest community.”
The Letter of Intent is the catalyst for both the City and YMCA to engage in feasibility assessments to determine what amenities are best-suited to meet the needs of the community and whether the partnership model is the best approach. These studies are expected to be completed later this year and, with favourable results, would move the project forward with additional community engagement to further develop the design of the facility. Construction is estimated to begin in 2017 with a grand opening in 2018.
McFadden said this project has been and continues to be complicated and time-consuming, from zoning and land use issues to sourcing funds to pay for it. “There is still a lot of work to do before this centre opens,” McFadden said, “but now we have a timeline we can work from and today marks a major hurdle toward creating a recreation facility for local residents and the wider community to enjoy.”
