It is with excitement that I share with you my first Community Newsletter. As your newly elected representative on Mississauga City Council, I thank each and every one of you for the opportunity to serve you in the role as Ward 4 Councillor!
Mississauga is a beautiful city, one that I am proud to have grown up and continue to reside in. It is truly diverse, with over 50 per cent of our residents having been born outside the country. We have large open spaces for our children to play in, numerous parks and playgrounds, a growing number of attractions and most important of all, one of the safest cities in Canada to call our home.
In June, the City of Mississauga received a $50,000 Age-Friendly Community Planning Grant. Awarded by the Province of Ontario, the City will use the Grant to develop an action plan towards becoming a World Health Organization (WHO) designated Age-FriendlyCommunity.
Mississauga’s annual Business Plan and Budget lays out what the City of Mississauga is doing as well as why and how much it costs.
Neighbourhood Watch? What is it?
Do you know the names of the people who live beside you? What about in front of you, or behind you? Would you be able to spot a stranger in your community? Do you know what to do and who to call in the event of an emergency?
The Mississauga Transitway is making travel faster and easier through the city. Service started at the first four stations of the Mississauga Transitway in November 2014. The remaining transitway stations are scheduled to open between 2016 and 2017.
The Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce is pleased to inform you that John Kovac, a member of our Croatian-Canadian community is a candidate for City Councillor, Ward 4 in the Mississauga By-Election, to be held April 27th, 2015.
He was born and raised in Mississauga and has lived there his entire life. John cares deeply for the beautiful city of Mississauga, its residents and homeowners; they are friends, family and neighbours.
John graduated from the University of Toronto and earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree, double-majoring in Literature and History. In order to help pay for his tuition, John learned a trade – carpentry. His summers were spent working on construction sites across Mississauga, contributing to the building of this great city.
Volunteering has always been a big part of John’s life. He truly believes in the electoral process and has spent the years following graduation working in public service. Recently, John managed a constituency office on behalf of a local Member of Provincial Parliament in Ward 4. In that position, he spent his days tending to the needs of local residents. John is a champion of social causes and has worked for a labour union as a liaison between the members and the government.
While the Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit (and non-political) network of Croatian-Canadian businesses, professionals and community organizations that does not endorse any political parties, we are pleased to acknowledge and support the endeavours of Canadians of Croatian descent. As such, in addition to wishing John a successful campaign and election, we feel that it is important to assist him in his campaign and in ensuring that our Croatian-Canadian community has a voice in municipal politics.
Many speak of the need for the next generation in our community to step up – this is our opportunity to support a younger, vibrant, intelligent community leader. John is a great candidate that will be able to fill the shoes of former Croatian-Canadian political representatives, including the likes of MPP Mr. John (Domagoj) Šola and MP Mr. Janko Perić, as well as join other representatives currently in office including Minister of State, the Hon. Lynne Yelich and the Mayor of Kitchener, Mr. Berry Vrbanovic, among others.
We ask you to please support John by contributing to his campaign: http://johnkovac.ca/
