August 2016

Dear friends and neighbours,

Wow, the summer flew right by and it is now time for the kids to go back to school. I would like to thank all the volunteers, sponsors and organizers who contributed so much to another great summer in Ward1derful. BBQ's in Applewood, Orchard Heights and Lakeview were delightful family events.

All of our waterfront festivals this year enjoyed fantastic weather and attendance. Congratulations to everyone involved and don't forget to come down to the Southside Shuffle on September 9, 10 and 11th. The Saturday Street Shuffle is always a hit and the Music Walk of Fame is again on Sunday at 4:00.

About Councillor Jim Tovey

One of six children born to Second World War veteran John Tovey and Joan Munn, a war bride from London England, Jim was born and raised in Victory Village in Mississauga. After a fifteen-year career as a vocalist, Jim returned to school for training in carpentry and architectural technology.

Working as a carpenter and heritage restoration specialist, Jim and his wife Lee moved to Lakeview in the southeast corner of Mississauga in 1989. The community of Lakeview at the time had a 120-year history of military, industrial and utility pollution. It hosted the Lakeview Coal Generating Station, the single largest point source of pollution in the GTA for 43 years.

In 2008, as President and founder of the Lakeview Ratepayers Association, Jim led that group to become the first citizen group in North America to create a community-driven Master Plan adopted by all levels of Government. The Legacy Project has received two National awards for Urban Planning. Jim was instrumental in convincing the City of Mississauga and the Provincial Government to abandon plans to construct a 900 MW gas plant and to adopt the concepts of a community designed revitalization plan for the eastern waterfront in Mississauga. Now known asInspiration Lakeview, the Lakeview Legacy Project received two national awards for planning and Jim was honoured by being chosen Mississauga Citizen of the Year for 2009.

In December 2010 Jim took the oath of office to serve the residents of Mississauga as Ward 1 Councillor. In 2012 Jim received the Queens Jubilee Medal for his work as a private citizen. Jim is honoured to continue to champion sustainable waterfront development and serve the citizens of Ward One.

Among other positions, Jim also represents Mississauga on the Credit Valley and Toronto RegionalConservation Authorities and the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Cities Initiative.
